Whether you’ve just acquired a finance degree, completed your accountancy exams or are completely new to the world of accounts, landing your first job in the industry can be tricky. Below are some great tips for getting your foot in the door and securing those all-important job interviews.
Networking
When you’re looking for your first finance job networking is without a doubt one of the best things you can do. Join professional organisations and keep an eye out for local networking groups because the events they hold provide the perfect opportunity to get to know people in the industry. If you make the right impression on these people then there is a good chance that they will remember you if they or someone they know has a vacancy.
Make the most out of the experience you have
Even if you have limited work experience it doesn’t mean that you can’t have a great CV. If you have any relevant work experience whatsoever then make sure you put it in. Also draw upon your education and put in any classes, knowledge and projects you have done that might appeal to employers. Also mention any achievements as this will show you are hard-working and any skills you have that will transfer well into an office environment.
Use your current job
If you are currently employed then try to use this to pick up any relevant experience that you can. Is there a finance team you can sit with for a couple hours a week? Are there any new responsibilities your employer can give you? No matter how small or insignificant it seems, anything you can add to your CV will look great.
Put all your effort into finding a finance job
Finding a new job can be difficult and time consuming and this is especially the case if you’re looking to get into a new industry with limited or no experience. Think of it as a part-time job and be prepared to spend time on it every day. Set up job alerts, search job boards, contact job agencies, network and contact companies directly. It might take some perseverance but it will pay off in the end.
Use an agency
If you’re a little bit lost on your job search then recruitment agencies are great. If you find one that specialises in your industry they can give you tips and pointers and will of course have plenty of contacts. They might not have your dream job on their books straight away but if you build up a good relationship with them then they will remember you when the right vacancy comes up.
