A new survey which was published earlier this month has revealed that HR Directors are still favouring the more traditional methods of recruitment such as job postings and using a recruitment consultancy over referrals and word of mouth.

It was found that less than one fifth (17%) of management level and staff level jobs are being filled through referrals such as employee recommendations and personal networks.

A separate survey also found that job boards are still a firm favourite amongst finance and accountancy professionals. 74% of those questioned said that they use the major job boards such as Totaljobs and Monster and 37% use industry specific job boards such as GAAPweb. Just 10% say that they use Facebook and Twitter to look for jobs and 20% look for opportunities at networking events.

With business confidence improving, nearly two-in-five (39%) companies say that they are planning on ramping up recruitment in the second half of 2015. This does mean that there has been an accelerated demand for skilled professionals above the current supply levels.

Although candidates have more avenues available to them today than they ever have done when it comes to their job search, the survey confirms that working directly with a recruitment consultancy when looking for a job still provides added value. Furthermore, going through an agency provides benefits to both the candidate and the recruiter.

Recruitment consultancies are highly knowledgeable of current hiring trends and have access to the hidden employment market. This can include jobs that go unadvertised and professionals who are not actively looking for work. Their deep networks and knowledge of the industry afford them the personal understanding to identify the right match between employer and employee.
