When we’re recruiting it’s natural to want to hire the most experienced and qualified people. After all, they’re the ones who are going to offer the most to our businesses right? Although you can’t knock a fantastic candidate and you do need experienced and skilled staff within your business, believe it or not, it doesn’t always hurt to mix things up.

Recruiting an inexperienced candidate might sound mad but it does actually have distinct advantages.

They’re readily available – The UK is currently suffering a skills shortage which means that companies are finding it incredibly difficult to find staff that meet their criteria. When these people do come up, they are frequently in demand and it can be a huge challenge to convince them to work for you over all the other recruiters who are fighting for them.

The end result is a costly and time consuming recruitment process and sometimes you don’t even get a new hire out of it. Less experienced workers are out there actively looking for new opportunities however and will therefore be a lot easier to find.

Keen for training and new opportunities – Candidates who are under-qualified or lacking experience are frequently the ones who are looking for new career opportunities. They are eager to learn and keen to become part of your company and believe it or not, with a little bit of patience, they can become your best assets.

They have fewer bad habits to correct – Hiring experienced candidates does of course have huge benefits but it has its drawbacks too. Recruiting younger, less experienced staff means that they’re not as set in their ways as older colleagues and as they’re new to the working world, they can be trained to fit in perfectly with your company culture. Remember that at the end of the day, someone can have all the qualifications and experience in the world but if they’re not the right fit for your company it simply won’t work.

Improved loyalty – An under-qualified candidate may lack in certain areas of experience or not have all the skills you’re looking for but if you take time to develop this person into a well-rounded employee, you can guarantee that you will be repaid with loyalty and a lot of hard work.
