Top tips for climbing the career ladder

There are no shortcuts when it comes to climbing the career ladder – it’s a process that takes time, effort and sometimes a lot of persistence. Possessing the right skills and knowledge are other obvious requirements as are having the trust and respect of those you intend on managing.

There are many factors that will influence your climb to the top but in our experience, there are a few tried and tested techniques that can help you along the way.

Work hard

Accomplishing your goals will take a lot of hard work and there may even be times when you are going to have to make personal sacrifices. The good news is that individuals who achieve success in this way tend to sustain their high positions and enjoy a much bigger sense of achievement because they know they have earned it.

Don’t over plan

A certain amount of planning is undeniably a positive thing, but believe it or not over-thinking can actually be detrimental to your career. Whilst you are so busy plotting and planning, you are throwing away valuable time that could be used for generating ideas, working hard and improving yourself. Some kind of a plan is advisable but don’t forget to make time to actually get it done because that is what is going to give you the long-term benefits.

Express yourself

No matter how junior you are in your company don’t be afraid to share your ideas. Not only does this show that you are interested in what you do but you never know – you may have come across a fantastic new concept that nobody else has thought of. Even if it never goes further than an idea people will come to respect you for having an opinion.

Be professional

Remaining professional at all times is very important – from the way you talk to others and how smart you look down to your attitude and willingness to work with others. This will be the difference between you getting a promotion or not because nobody wants to work with someone who doesn’t benefit the company in any way and isn’t a very likeable person.

Enthusiasm

The enthusiasm you have for your job, company and colleagues is vital. If you want that promotion you have to show others that you love what you do and are willing to work hard for it. On top of this, people would much rather be around those who are positive and help to create a good working environment.
