The best jobs in the world

Fancy a job testing waterslides, being a chocolate taster, island caretaker or ‘Director of Fun?’. Here is a round-up of some of the best jobs in the world that believe it or not, some very lucky people get to call work.

Island Caretaker

If you got offered a job paying £75,000 for a 6 month contract, rent-free accommodation in a three bedroom villa and your very own swimming pool, you would be pretty happy with yourself. Now imagine that you are based in Australia’s beautiful Great Barrier Reef – you would probably start to wonder what you have to do in return for all this. Providing you enjoy writing, you will understand why ‘Island Caretaker’ is regularly voted the best job in the world. Every year, applicants battle it out to secure this prestige title that in return only requires them to blog about their experiences to promote the area. Although the interview process is pretty challenging, we’d say it’s well worth it in return for living a care-free life of luxury.

Luxury Bed Tester

Most people can only dream of falling asleep on the job and getting away with it. Believe it or not, a student from Birmingham City University is actively being encouraged to do this in her new role. Having been selected to test out luxury beds for one month – and get paid for it – the student will be helping with a sleep survey that will provide an objective view of the beds on sale and also look into what brings a good night’s sleep.

Waterslide Tester

Tommy Lynch travels over 27,000 miles a year for his job, testing holiday resort waterslides. It is his responsibility to check the height, speed, water quantity and landing of the flumes as well as all safety aspects. As well as enjoying himself on waterslides all day, Tommy gets to travel to holiday destinations such as Egypt, Mexico, Majorca, Florida, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.

Director of Fun

A six year old boy who applied to become the Director of York’s National Railway Museum wasn’t quite successful in his application but was instead appointed the museum’s Director of Fun. The ambitious youngster was appointed to the role after bosses were impressed with his confidence and his job is now to inform staff how he thinks they can ensure the museum is the most fun place for kids to spend a day out.

Bike Riding Photographer

Google has hired two lucky young men to ride around France on bicycles that have been equipped to capture images that will be added to Google’s Street View Maps. All the men have to do is cycle around well-known sites such as Chateau du Versailles, the Jardin du Luxembourg and Les Halles and their bikes do the rest. Providing there is no rain on the horizon, we can’t think of a more relaxing job.

Zombie

If you’re into all things supernatural then a job at London’s spookiest attraction, The London Bridge Experience and London Tombs should be right up your street. Acting as a zombie, successful applicants simply aim to scare visitors all day long.

Beer Tester

Taste is arguably the most important factor contributing to the long-term success of any alcoholic brew. Taking this into consideration, beer testers are regularly sought upon and are in fact extremely valuable to brewers. As if drinking beer for a living isn’t enough, successful applicants are paid to travel the world whilst doing so. Experience in this competitive field is essential but somehow we doubt this will be a problem for many.
