No matter where you are in your career, chances are that you are hoping to get a promotion in your finance job at some point. Below are some top tips to help you climb the corporate ladder and get that dream job you have always wished for.

Work for a company that has opportunities

When applying for jobs, seek out companies that have opportunities for you to advance. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to work for a huge corporation but do try to look for a company that is doing well and has plans to grow.

Put in the effort

If you want a promotion in your finance job then you need to be willing to put in the effort long term. Aside from being great at your job, it can have a big impact if you make sure that you are always on time, have a good attendance record and are always willing to go that extra mile. An employer is only ever going to promote someone who shows enthusiasm and a willingness to better themselves, so don’t be afraid to give it everything you’ve got when it comes to your job.

Make your work known

There is every chance that you are doing your job fantastically well and deserve a promotion. The problem is, if nobody knows what you’re doing and how well you’re doing it, chances are that you will be missed out when it comes to handing out promotions. Make sure that you provide your manager with regular updates about what you’re doing and make a note of your achievements because this could be the difference between getting a promotion or not.

Make your goals known

If you are working towards a promotion then make sure your superiors know about this – for all they know you are happy in your current role and have no desire to progress to the next level. If your manager knows what your goals are however, they are likely to help you progress and when opportunities do come up, chances are that you will be the first person that springs to mind.

Look out for new opportunities

Occasionally, opportunities do just fall into our laps but this is rare. If you want a promotion in your finance job then you need to keep an eye out for opportunities that arise in your company. Whether it’s through the staff intranet or letting the recruitment team know that you are interested in being informed of new opportunities, find a way to keep on top of this. Don’t just apply for any new role that comes up however. If you do this then you will not be taken seriously and your manager might start to question your loyalty to your job. If the right opportunity does come up though put all your effort into the process because chances are that other people will be applying for the role too.

If you are looking for a completely new challenge and feel it’s time to leave your existing company then you can of course look for a finance job at a different firm. Feel free to take a look at our current vacancies and don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
