If you ask any recruiter what they’re looking for in a new hire, chances are the majority will reel off the same list; relevant experience, the right qualifications and good references. Whilst these are all great attributes to have, they should be a given and there are other important qualities that you really should be looking out for.

Are they the right cultural fit?

As well as employing people who are qualified and good at their jobs, you also need to hire people that everyone else wants to work with. Successful teams are comprised of people who bond well with each other and who are willing to put in the long hours and intense collaboration when it’s needed. Teams aren’t going to work well together if there’s someone amongst them who upsets the balance.

No matter how great a candidate seems on paper, go with your instincts and if you really don’t think they’ll fit in with the company, it’s probably wiser to hire someone else. If you’re not sure about someone then get them in for another interview with the rest of the team and that will give you a good indication of how everyone will get on.

Do they bring fresh ideas and opinions?

Finding someone who fits in with the culture of your company doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone has to have the same ideas and opinions. The best ideas and creations come from diverse teams who can bounce ideas off each other. This will help to attract different audiences and come up with new business ideas that wouldn’t arise if everyone had the same opinions.

Do they have ambition?

You can hire someone with all the skills and qualifications in the world and they can be the perfect cultural fit for your company but if they don’t have drive, it’s pointless. If you want your business to be a success then you need to hire people who are ambitious and who get up excited to come to work every day and do their best.

Many companies have employed candidates who don’t have all the necessary skills and qualifications but they do have a hunger to do their best and succeed. More often than not, it’s these employees who go on to exceed expectations and get promoted in a short timeframe.
